Kampala. The Chief Justice Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe on August 11, 2017 presided over the opening of an ultra-modern state-of-the-art auditorium at the Law Development Centre (LDC). The Chief Justice said the facility will help LDC improve service delivery.
Present at the function were stakeholders from the Justice, Law and Order Sector as well as development partners led bythe Netherlands Ambassador to Uganda. H.E Henk Jan Bakker.
The idea of an auditorium at LDC was hatched in the 2007/2008 financial year. Construction commenced in 2012 with funding from Government supported by JLOS development partners.
The over Shs4bn auditorium has capacity to accommodate up to 1,000 people. It can contribute to legal education by providing space for general lectures, guest speakers, moot competitions and generating money from external users who can pay for space. The ultra modern auditorium at LDC is equipped with modern seats, public address system and is air-conditioned.
"This development, no doubt, is going to provide the students with an improved, modern and state of the art studying environment," the Chief Justice said.
He added that the Auditorium will solve the problem ofspace that the centre has been grappling with and also offer a conduciveenvironment for students.
The commissioning also doubled as a triple launchceremony for the Uganda Law Reports for the years 2010, 2011 and 2012. Theseare important legal tools, which provide precedents to judges at the bench andLawyers at the Bar. The law reports are also helpful to law students andlegal researchers.
TheChief Justice commended the LDC for making a noble contribution towards furtherequipping the courts to do a better job. He said judicial officers (judges,registrars and magistrates) need a lot of law reports and other legal referencematerials to enrich their writing of rulings and judgments.
Hon. JusticeKatureebe said he would lobby the government to provide more funds to the Judiciaryfor purchasing the legal references to aid the judicial officers do a betterjob.
The Chief Justice further said: "LDC has been at the forefront of providing anenduring record of significant decisions of the Courts of Judicature which is essentialto the development of jurisprudence in Uganda. I commend LDC for a job welldone"
